Nigeria; more than 12 Shia Muslims killed in the clashes on Ashura

Nigeria; More than 12 Shia Muslims have been killed in the deadly clashes with the Sunni Muslims in the northern region on their holy day according to the news.

Shia Muslims were mourning on the annual day of Ashura, the day when the grandson of Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH was killed.

Shia Muslim group mourns every year on 10th Muharram the Islamic day in the remembrance of Hazrat Hussain.

Eyewitnesses told to the media that clashes were started when army tried to stop the Shia people to cross some fences the state’s Funtua.

On the other hand security forces have claimed that some other Muslim groups attacked on the Shia Muslim mourning.

A house belonging to a leader of pro-Iranian Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) Shia party was also set alight in the city.

Kaduna state government outlawed the IMN last Friday, saying it was a threat to the state.

In the northern city of Kano, police say as Shia mourners were returning home after their procession they were set upon by young men – and officers had to rescue 100 of them from their attackers.

In Jos, the main city of the central state of Plateau state, eyewitnesses says an Islamic Shia centre set on fire.
